The square design is a reference to the Buzi 补子 fitted on Qing Dynasty court official robes that denoted their rank within palace court. The crane Buzi badge was specially reserved for first rank officials of Qing Dynasty.

Cranes in Chinese culture embody longevity and peace, it is the second most favored bird symbol after the phoenix.
